How it works
- Energy added = usable battery × (end % − start %).
- Energy from the charger = energy added ÷ charging efficiency. Some energy is lost as heat; we assume 90 % on AC and 95 % on DC unless you change it.
- AC time = energy ÷ the lower of the charger's power and the car's on-board charger power.
- DC time is added up one percent at a time. Each step uses the lower of the charger's power and the car's power at that level, read from the car's published charging curve when we have it. Otherwise we use full power up to 80 % and a straight taper to 20 % of it at 100 %, and say so.
This is an estimate. Battery temperature, age, the charger's real output and the car's own limits change it. For installing or upgrading a home charger, ask a licensed electrician.
